In 2018, Beacon Builders was awarded an $11.6 million contract to build 90 units of apartment buildings.  At the time all the local framing crews in Spokane Washington were maxed out and unable to bid the work.  So Beacon Builders bought the wall package from the a Wall Pre-Fabrication company.  The walls that arrived onsite were wrong more often than right.  They were too long or too short.  Some were built inside out or upside down.  It was not a good experience and so we decided to Pre-Fabricate our own walls.

 

Beacon Builders now handles all prefabrication with their sister company Flawless Walls.  Flawless Walls was built because Beacon Builders knew that the current providers of prefabrication walls, weren’t being held up to the same standard that Flawless Walls holds today.

Mass Timber

Mass Timber is structural building components built up out of smaller pieces of wood joined with structural adhesive to work as a single unit.  This is most familiar to people as a stand “Glu Lam Beam” that has been used in residential construction for a generation.

The amazing thing about a Glu Lam beam is that the mill can take smaller pieces of smaller trees and build them up into a bigger unit.  Our forest has many small trees that need to be removed for the health of the forest, but by themselves, they have no economic value.  However, when those small trees are built into Mass Timber, they take on the same value as concrete and steel at a lower cost and much lower carbon footprint.

Why Prefabrication Walls?

There are many advantages to machine fabricating stick framed walls in a factory setting.  By using prefabricated walls, Beacon Builders is able to produce walls, year round.  By producing the walls indoor, production is no longer affected by unpredictable weather conditions.  With machine based production, production is not controlled by the level of labor.

Beacon Builders is able to finish projects faster, due to using prefabricated walls.  With a system so precise, the production crew does not need to wait for foundations & then build to the foundation.  That means walls can start being produced, as soon as the permit is pulled.
